National Grid Gas Pipeline – Harefield to Southall

PUBLIC EXHIBITION DATES
Tuesday 11th July 2.00pm to 8.00pm
Uxbridge Golf Course, The Drive, Harefield Place, Uxbridge UB10 8AQ
Monday 17th July 2.00pm to 8.00pm
Hayes Community Campus, Coldharbour Lane, Hayes UB3 3BB

As you are aware National Grid is planning to construct a new gas pipeline from Harefield to Southall and an Environmental Statement has been submitted to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for approval.

During the preparation of the Environmental Statement an Environmental Impact Assessment was carried out. As part of this process we consulted a number of organisations including Environment Agency, Countryside Agency, English Nature, English Heritage, London Borough of Ealing, London Borough of Hillingdon and London Wildlife Trust.

The Environmental Statement is now subject to further consultation and public examination before DTI consent can be granted for the pipeline route and permission for its construction can be obtained.

As part of this consultation public exhibitions are taking place on Tuesday 11th July, 2pm to 8pm, at Uxbridge Golf Course, The Drive, Harefield Place, Uxbridge and on Monday 17th July, 2pm to 8pm, at Hayes Community Campus, Coldharbour Lane, Hayes.

The full Environmental Statement will be on display and the project team will be on hand to discuss its content and to answer questions on the construction process.

The pipeline is essential to meet the significant increase in gas demand in the west London area. Subject to approval, tunnel construction will begin in April 2007, with the majority of pipeline construction activity between April 2008 and October 2008.

Please let me know whether you are able to attend an exhibition by either returning the enclosed form in the stamped addressed envelope or by calling the dedicated project information line on 0800 731 1231.

Mobile Phone Recycling Appeal

Mobile Phone Recycling Appeal - Can You Help Raise £200,000 for Hospice Care at Michael Sobell House?

Residents, community groups and businesses in the London Borough of Hillingdon are being asked to help raise funds for patient care at Michael Sobell House, the hospice and palliative care centre based at Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood, Middlesex by donating their unwanted mobile phones for recycling.

With each unwanted mobile phone sent for recycling being worth on average £5 to the hospice, the Friends are hoping to raise £200,000 for patient care - the equivalent of paying for eight specialist palliative care nurses at Michael Sobell House.

The hospice is extremely dependent on fundraising and voluntary donations to continue its patient care and needs to raise £1 million pounds in 2006 to continue patient care. The hospice is financially supported by The Friends of Michael Sobell House (The Friends), a Registered Charity (No 1079638).

On average we change our mobile phones every 15 months even though they are designed to last 10 years. Most of us probably have at least one old handset if not more taking up space in a cupboard at home or an office draw at work. The mobile phone recycling appeal is an easy way to recycle your old handset which will generate much needed funds for the important work the Michael Sobell House does whilst also helping to protect the environment. Please support the appeal by recycling your old mobile phones and encouraging your friends, family and colleagues to do the same.

Up to four unwanted mobiles can be mailed direct to the recycling company, Aurom Environmental website www.aurom.co.uk in special post paid mailing bags. For a supply of bags please telephone Steve Grudgings on 01923 844606 or Geraint Hughes on 01923 844550 in the Michael Sobell House Fundraising Office. Alternatively please email recycling@michaelsobellhouse.co.uk

Could you help us further by encouraging your employer to become a collection point for unwanted company and employee mobiles?

Please feel free to forward this email to any family members, friends or colleagues that live in the Borough who might benefit from this information.

Yours faithfully,

Duncan Jones

How loud is your road?

About:

Noise can cause annoyance, interrupt conversation, disturb sleep and, in extreme conditions, cause physical damage to those affected. The types of noise that are experienced can be classified into some fairly broad categories. For example, occupational noise which is experienced at work, neighbour or neighbourhood noise and environmental (aka ambient) noise caused by transport and industry.

The National Ambient Noise Strategy

In early 2002, the government undertook a consultation on its proposal, announced in the Rural White Paper 2000 to develop an Ambient Noise Strategy in England. The strategy is due to be developed by 2007.

Noise Mapping England Project

The Noise Mapping England Project is part of the first stage of the development of the National Ambient Noise Strategy (NANS). It also addresses the requirements of the Rural White Paper.

The project aims to gather information on the ambient noise climate in England. In simple terms, this means determining the number of people affected by different levels of ambient noise, the source of that noise (i.e. road, rail, air and industry) and the locations of the people affected. Noise can be assessed in a number of ways and we have chosen to carry out this noise assessment project through noise mapping.

The objectives of the Noise Mapping England Project are:

* To calculate noise levels and produce noise maps across England which determine noise exposure data, identify relatively quiet areas and noise 'hotspots' and provide information to assess the relationship between noise and other policy areas.
* To use the information obtained to help develop the National Ambient Noise Strategy
* To gain knowledge which will assist in the implementation of the Environmental Noise Directive, e.g. on the location, acquisition and accuracy of input data.

London Road Traffic Noise Map

Maps have been created to provide information on the levels of road traffic noise across the whole of the Greater London area. Other types of noise will be covered by projects that are being planned or progressed at present.
